Treating Trauma
Trauma is a complex and highly individual experience. When something traumatic happens to us, or we witness something terrifying, our nervous system gets hijacked; it's working as intended in the moment. We go into fight, flight, freeze or fawn so that we can survive. But sometimes, long after the threat leaves us, we continue to feel unsafe. We get locked into a life that feels more like surviving than living.
Trauma can look like constant anxiety, discomfort, and uncertainty. It feels like a constant looming shadow waiting to rear its ugly head. It can look like difficulties setting boundaries, difficulties trusting yourself and others, or feeling overly responsible for how others are feeling. It leaves you feeling isolated, confused, and dissociated. You're reacting to things in ways you can't understand or grasp, like your sense of self has splintered off.
What is complex trauma?
Trauma isn't just limited to one event. Repetitive or ongoing traumatic events can result in something known as CPTSD, or complex trauma. This can look like people growing up in frightening and dangerous homes, chronic bullying, poverty, and emotional neglect, among many other things. Chronic shame, perfectionism, constantly feeling "on alert," or overwhelmed- these are just some of the ways these pervasive symptoms can make life feel paralyzing. As in PTSD, the nervous system remains "hijacked," and you're left feeling constantly on edge or dissociated.
About EMDR
EMDR, or eye movement desensitization reprocessing, is a type of somatic (body-focused) therapy designed to target traumatic memories and lessen their impact on your daily living. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on the brain’s natural ability to heal. During EMDR sessions, clients are guided to recall traumatic memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation—often through eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones. This helps the brain reprocess the memory, reducing its emotional charge and allowing for more adaptive, healthy beliefs to take its place. Many clients experience significant relief in a shorter period of time compared to some other therapeutic methods.
